Mayday Glasgow was a major success. Over 1000 people turned out to reclaim Mayday as a public holiday. We gathered at Buchanan St Underground at 1pm. People from all walks of life turned up, many in fabulous costumes, creating a true carnival atmosphere. The drums (thanks SheBoom) began their samba beat and the excitement levels soared skywards. The sound system arrived and we took to the road. At first, the police attempted to stop us, then thought better of it.
We danced and laughed around George Square, where we bound the statue of Gladstone (an ex-Prime Minister) in hessian and a blindfold, then gave him a placard reading "Culture of Denial". As we left the square, a beautiful garden mysteriously appeared on the red asphalt, containing vegetables, trees, and flowers. Then we were off around town.
We brought so many good vibes, even the police were grooving. We gave out flyers and flowers as we went, in preperation for a Summer of Direct Action and guerilla gardening. We stopped outside some nasty companies, then payed a visit to Strathclyde Police HQ, where we mocked their degrading and mindless role of hired thugs for the State. We continued on to Charing Cross motorway junction, which we closed for a short time. It was decided that this protest was about so much more than simply anti-road, and that shutting the road for a prolonged period might confuse the issue.
We instead made for Kelvingrove Park, where we had a free festival with three sound systems, kids' space, info stalls, and workshops. Everyone had a great time, and the public knows how we feel about global capitalism without anyone getting hurt. Well done Glasgow!
